Word Chippa is a hybrid meta/word game that incorporates tamagotchi-style customisability alongside a classic but unique word finding game.

In this project I leant heavily on my UI Design skills. Covering the following points:

– Information Architecture

– Feature Consolidation

– Visual Hierarchy

– UI Illustrations

– Call-To-Action Buttons

– Active State/Inactive State Screens

– Fun/Engaging Mood

– Competitor Research

Meta Game

Word Game

build mode chippa

The two aspects of the game are inter-connected in such a way that incentivises players not only to keep playing through the levels, but also maximising their points tally so they can purchase their desired items, earn rewards and make progress on the story mode.

The main focus for the meta game was to create a fun engaging ambience that encourages users to build a nice home for the bird character which they are taking along a journey while navigating outside of the main levels.

This specific level design is for an mvp version which adopts a builder style to simplify the visuals whilst the complex bird concept progressed behind the scenes.

How-to-play

For the home screen, this interface contains various user flows so that the player can decide what aspect of the game they wish to start with or explore. Through the use of sizing, colours, cta’s, digital illustrations and an overall vibrant feel, users can feel a sense of belonging and attachment to Chippa (the bird character).

This is the type of how-to-play screen which is designed to be very clear and obvious so that the cognitive load for users to play the game is very low and they can intuitively learn the game mechanics quickly

Coverging towards a style

The four provided images showcase moving from a functional but fragmented layout toward a cohesive, user-centric visual language. The progression demonstrates a clear focus on visual harmony, logical grouping, and the strategic use of space to prioritize the user’s most important tools. The fun palette of colours suits in creating a cute aesthetic as well as help users anthropomorphise the character to their liking.

Points & Rewards

These two screens depict when the level is complete and the player can opt to collect either logs or popcorn. Having the opportunity to decide this outcome gives users greater autonomy and as a result a greater sense of achievement as they progress though each milestone of the game.
